Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Principles for Phage Canada
As a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing bacteriophage research and its applications in Canada, we recognize that scientific progress and innovation are strengthened by the inclusion of diverse perspectives, experiences, and identities. We are committed to building an equitable and inclusive community that reflects and serves the broad diversity of scientists, clinicians, students, and communities engaged in or affected by phage research.
1. Fair access
We are committed to reducing structural and systemic barriers in science. We are working to ensure fair access to opportunities in phage research, networking, mentorship, and leadership—particularly for those from historically marginalized or underrepresented groups in STEM, including Indigenous, Black, racialized, disabled, 2SLGBTQIA+, and economically disadvantaged individuals.
2. Diverse community
We strive to promote representation across a spectrum of identities, disciplines, sectors, and geographic regions—including voices from early-career scientists and patients impacted by antimicrobial resistance. We believe that diverse contributions strengthen the creativity and impact of the phage field.
3. Inclusion
We aim to cultivate a culture where all members feel valued, safe, and empowered to participate fully. This includes accessible meeting formats, inclusive language in our communications, and codes of conduct that promote respectful dialogue and collaboration across differences.
4. Accountability and Transparency
We will set and regularly evaluate goals related to EDI, seek input from our community, and share updates transparently. We welcome feedback that helps us learn and grow as an organization, and will take action to address concerns when raised.
5. Collaboration and Allyship
We support partnerships with organizations and communities that share our commitment to equity and inclusion in science. We encourage our members to act as allies, build inclusive spaces in their own institutions, and support emerging scientists from underrepresented groups.
These principles inform all of our activities—from conference planning and working group formation to mentorship programs and outreach. We believe that equity, diversity, and inclusion are essential not only for fairness, but for the vitality and sustainability of the phage research community.
